There was a day when the mere mention of the United States on foreign lips inspired awe and wonder. People in far away lands dreamed of leaving home, family and heritage to face an arduous journey and uncertainty of what the future held for them on the distant shore of the Americas. The one thing that they knew for certain was that in America there were no limits to what you could achieve if one applied oneself.
Unfortunately, this is no longer true. Capitalism has fallen out of favor with the world at large. Americans are seemingly hated for achieving success and creating personal wealth. Yet when the floods come, the tsunamis ravage, the plagues kill, Americans are the first to lend a hand, send support, and give money.
Sadly, the United States Federal Government also seems to disapprove of capitalism. The congress insists on punishing corporations for building wealth with higher and higher taxes to the point of driving American corporations to outsource business on foreign shores. New factories are not built on American soil, but on foreign soil, and foreign nations are glad to have those jobs.
The Federal Government, i.e. our elected officials, needs to make American soil business friendly again. Bring those foreign jobs back to America by slashing corporate federal taxes to the bone. Yes, it will take time to lure corporations back to American soil, but there is no time like the present to get started.
The states that are not business friendly, states such as Michigan, will continue to lose industry as other states vie for those new factories with sweetheart deals and a business-friendly environment. It's been said that businesses fear moving their plants away from the large cities because of a lack of staffing and skilled workers, but I can assure you that anyone desiring a job will pack and move across country on a heartbeat if there is a promise of food on the table and a better life.
This in turn creates a need for new housing and support services, and will generate further growth and increase the federal tax base as we put Americans back to work.
What this country needs is for capitalism to make a comeback. When the democrats figure this out, the economic problem will be solved. And let the socialists look down their snooty noses in disgust at Americans as we prosper. Personally, I'd rather be an independent capitalist than a socialist waiting for a government handout any day.
